Responsible Tourism

We are really proud to announce that, since our last newsletter, we have won the Responsible Tourism Award for “Best in Mountain Environment” category at the Virgin Holiday Award ceremony in London.

We have also been selected as one of three finalists in the “Community Benefit” category of the World Travel and Tourism Council Awards from a field of 147 entrants.  There are only 12 finalists for all categories and CAT is one of just two from the UK. We will learn in May whether we have been chosen as the winner.

West Yorkshire Scouts

31 West Yorkshire Scout Leaders trekked with CAT to Melamchigaun in the Helambu in October 2008 having raised money to build a hostel for the schoolchildren who attend the CAN supported school there. The Group spent 16 days in the village and achieved the remarkable feat of completing the 80 foot, 5 room hostel up to roof level before they departed. The village construction committee have since added the roof. The group have provided sufficient funds for the building to be completed internally as well.

Other Charity Treks

Overgate Hospice and Headway charities both ran successful fund raising treks to Bhara Pokhari in the autumn season contributing £44,000 and £24,500 respectively to their charities. 7 CAN Charity fundraisers had a really enjoyable time completing the Helambu Trail in 8 days and contributed £7000 to CAN’s projects. The feed-back from all these treks was excellent and illustrated just how much enjoyment can be had from trekking for a cause.

Schools, Families, Charities

We very much enjoy working with these groups. We differ from most other trekking agencies in that we are able to provide tailor made treks to suit a range of abilities and experience. We are prepared to meet with or talk to groups and families to help them decide on treks they want to do, adjust trek timings and create customised itineraries. Please phone us on 017687 71890 to find out more.

Morocco

New for 2009. CAT is offering treks in Morocco to individuals, schools, families and other groups. Morocco is an exotic and interesting destination – yet only 3½ hours flying time from the UK and served by the budget airlines from several UK airports direct to Marrakesh. Trekking with the Berber, with either mules or camels, these are fully supported treks. Whether climbing Mt Toubkal (North Africa’s highest peak), exploring little visited parts of Morocco’s mountain ranges or camel trekking in the Sahara, Morocco has it all.

Peru

We are now able to offer treks on the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu, and on other Inca trails in Peru ( many of which are not offered by other companies) as a result of our partnership with a new agent we have been talking to for some time. Complete itineraries and costs will soon be added to our website on www.catreks.com. Trek itineraries are available and will be uploaded to our website soon. In the meantime, if you would like to discuss the itineraries and get details about costs, please phone Martin West on his mobile on 07768 146616.

Mera Peak, Makalu, Kanchenjunga

These are amongst our most favourite high level or peak treks and interest in them has been growing for this autumn. All the itineraries are available on our website but please contact Captain Tek Limbu on 017687 71890 if you want more information on these spectacular challenges.

Mera Peak – meet the challenge of the highest trekking peak in Nepal that ranks amongst the most rewarding.

Makalu – trek to the base camp of the world’s fifth highest mountain and combine the challenge of the high pass at Shipton La with the sensational views of a ridge walk.

Kanchenjunga - the routes to North and South Base Camps are long but not unduly arduous with the trekking peak of Teng Kongma as an option which will appeal to those in search of a greater challenge.

EXCITING NEW TREK - NAAR PHU

Looking for a new trekking region in Nepal ? Why not join Ann Foulkes who will be leading our recce trek to Naar Phu 5th -30th of October 2009 (land-only dates), at a land-only cost of £1675. This is what Ann has to say about why she has chosen this area for CAT’s new trek.

“The Annapurna Circuit has long been one of my very favourite treks for its incredible diversity of climatic zones, flora and fauna. It is a trek that I’ve chosen to lead several times. The Naar Phu trek is a loop off the Annapurna Circuit. As soon as I heard that the Naar Phu area had been opened to trekkers I knew that I would simply have to explore this special area which is close to the Tibetan border. A world away from the popular Annapurna Circuit, we will still be a curiosity to the locals. This is snow leopard country; we might just be lucky enough to see one of these magnificent creatures.”

“As a diversion off the eastern side of the Annapurna Circuit, we are convinced that it won’t be long before the Naar Phu trek becomes a popular alternative to the main Circuit, which, as you may know, is now being affected by road building. Come and join me on this very special opportunity to explore the area before it becomes too popular”.

“We anticipate that this trek will be especially popular with the connoisseur trekker – perhaps you have trekked before, but are now looking for something a little different – off the normal trail and prepared to explore a little. We have programmed in enough time and several short trekking days so that we can take our time not only to enjoy the incredible views that this trek offers, but to spend time with the villagers and to absorb local life and culture.”
