The twin peaks of 7,818m Nanda Devi form India’s second highest mountain, situated in a remote region bordering Nepal and Tibet. The alpine glaciers, high valleys and flower-strewn meadows on the eastern approach to this magnificent mountain are an enticing world apart. Using a sleeper train to break the journey from Delhi we travel across the northern plains of India, arriving in the foothills of the Himalaya and border region of Kumaon. Our trek takes in a wide range of terrain, from semi-tropical rainforests with many huge butterflies, exotic birds and large lizards, to glaciated valleys. This region has remained unspoiled notwithstanding its popularity.
