Manaslu Circuit vs Annapurna Sanctuary: which trek is right for you?

Two of Nepal's finest treks, and two very different experiences. One takes you along a remote high-altitude circuit past yak pastures and Tibetan border villages. The other climbs into a natural amphitheatre of 7,000m peaks, surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on earth. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose.

Charlie Knights August 2026 Route Guides Manaslu Annapurna

It's the question we're asked more than almost any other: Manaslu or Annapurna? Both are genuine Himalayan classics, both are led by our expert Sherpa guides, and both include a direct £50 per person donation to Community Action Nepal — but beyond that, they're very different treks, built for slightly different people.

This guide breaks down altitude, difficulty, crowds, scenery and cost, so you can work out which one actually fits what you're looking for — not just which one you've heard of first.

Manaslu Circuit: the remote high road

// The Route
Where Tibet Begins

An 18-day circuit around Manaslu, the world's eighth highest mountain, climbing from subtropical river valleys through ancient Buddhist villages to the 5,160m Larkya La pass. The final stretch runs close enough to the Tibetan border that yak traders on the high trails are a regular sight. This is a genuinely remote trek — teahouses are simpler and further apart than on Nepal's more established routes, and the sense of wilderness is constant.

Annapurna Sanctuary: the mountain amphitheatre

// The Route
Into the heart of the Annapurnas

A 16-day trek climbing steadily through rhododendron forest and Gurung villages to Annapurna Base Camp, sitting inside a natural amphitheatre ringed by Annapurna I, Machapuchare and Hiunchuli. The infrastructure here is more established than Manaslu's — teahouses are more frequent and better equipped — which makes it a slightly gentler introduction to high-altitude trekking without losing any of the drama. Nights at Base Camp itself, with the peaks close on every side, are what people remember most.

"Manaslu felt like a proper expedition — remote, wild, and we barely saw another group all trek. Annapurna is the one I'd send a friend on for their first Himalayan trip." — CAT Himalaya guest

Which one should you choose?

Choose Manaslu if you want the quieter, wilder trail — fewer other trekkers, a stronger sense of remoteness, and a genuine circuit that changes character completely from lush valley to high Tibetan-border pass. It suits trekkers who've done at least one multi-day trek before and want something that feels a step further from the crowds.

Choose Annapurna if this is your first high-altitude trek, or you want slightly more comfortable teahouses along the way without sacrificing scale or drama. The Sanctuary itself — surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the world — is one of the most photographed views in Nepal for good reason.

Both treks are led by our expert Sherpa guides, capped at 12 guests, and include a direct £50 per person donation to Community Action Nepal on every booking — visible on your confirmation, not buried in the price.
