// Nepal’s Hidden Himalaya

The Himalaya without the crowds — and closer than you think

The Langtang National Park sits almost due north of Kathmandu, butting up against the Tibetan border — yet it remains one of the least-visited major trekking regions in Nepal. While the Everest and Annapurna corridors fill with trekkers each autumn, Langtang retains the feel of a genuinely wild landscape: primeval forest, high glaciated valleys, Tibetan-origin villages, sacred lakes and a stillness that is increasingly rare in the Himalaya.

Langtang is also CAT’s most versatile destination. Five distinct routes cater for all abilities and time frames — from a 10-day introductory trek ideal for first-time Himalayan visitors, to a 19-day high-altitude adventure combining the Langtang Valley with the sacred Gosainkund lakes and the Helambu ridge. And uniquely among Nepal’s major trekking regions, all routes include direct visits to Community Action Nepal projects.

All dates are flexible — Langtang can be trekked year-round outside of the monsoon months. We design your exact route and itinerary around your group, your dates and your ability.

Route 01 · 10 Days
Bhairav Kund
Max altitude: 4,010m · Moderate

CAT’s newest Langtang route, designed for trekkers who want a genuine challenge within a tight timescale. From Tamang villages to the unpopulated holy lake of Bhairav Kund at 4,000m, the descent passes through rhododendron and oak forests to Tanisthan and Duguna before a visit to the CAN-supported school for deaf children at Bahrabise. A trek of extraordinary contrasts.

Route 02 · 12 Days
Helambu Skyline
Max altitude: 3,771m · Moderate

The great attraction of this trek is the people and the villages — and the opportunity to visit a number of Community Action Nepal projects along the route. An immensely rewarding trek for walkers of good fitness, the Helambu Skyline passes through traditional Sherpa and Tamang communities with extraordinary mountain views throughout. An ideal introduction to the Langtang region.

Route 03 · 12 Days
Langtang Valley
Max altitude: 4,772m · Moderate–Demanding

The classic route that captures the essence of Langtang. Contouring along the northern side of the valley in view of surrounding peaks, through villages of Tibetan-origin people on an ancient trading route with Tibet. Three days to explore the glacier and moraines of the upper valley, dominated by the awesome face of Langtang Lirung. Ideal as a first Himalayan trek or a standalone adventure.

Route 04 · 19 Days
Langtang & Gosainkund
Max altitude: 4,773m · Demanding

The complete Langtang experience. After a week in the valley, the route heads for Gosainkund — sacred lakes revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, reached via a climb that rewards with arguably the finest Himalayan panorama in the entire region: Ganesh Himal to the Annapurnas. Over the 4,600m Laurebina Pass to Tharepati, then a classic ridge descent through the farmlands and villages of the Helambu region.

Route 05 · 16 Days
Langtang, Ganja La & Yala Peak
Max altitude: 5,500m · Demanding

For the adventurous. This combines the beautiful scenery of the Langtang Valley with the chance to summit Yala Peak (5,503m) and nearby Tsergo Ri — both achievable with basic winter skills and full acclimatisation. From their summits the entire upper valley unfolds in its extraordinary scale. A genuine trekking peak challenge in the Langtang context, accessible to those with the right preparation.

Route 06 · 16 Days
Tamang Heritage & Langtang Valley
Max altitude: 4,773m · Moderate

A recently opened trail combining spectacular Himalayan views with deep cultural immersion in Tamang and Tibetan heritage. Starting from Shyabru Besi, the route passes through Goljung, Gatlang, Chilime and Tatopani, with views into Tibet from Goljung Pass. At Briddim, a Tibetan village, we experience home-stay accommodation, traditional food and local family life. Then the Langtang Valley itself.

Community Action Nepal
The only operator in the UK that routes through CAN project sites on every Langtang trek

The Bhairav Kund route specifically includes a visit to the CAN-supported school for deaf children at Bahrabise — one of the most moving stops on any CAT trek. The Helambu Skyline visits multiple CAN community projects along its route. Every Langtang booking includes a £50 direct donation to Community Action Nepal. This is not background charity work. It is built into the trek itself.

Langtang at a glance

The Landscape

Nepal’s second largest national park covers 1,710km² from subtropical valleys to high glaciated terrain. The Langtang Valley is dominated by the imposing face of Langtang Lirung (7,246m). Sacred lakes at Gosainkund shimmer at 4,380m. The Tibetan border is always close.

Wildlife & Flora

Nearly 1,000 plant species, 160 bird species and 30 mammals including the snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan tahr and musk deer. In spring, rhododendrons are in spectacular bloom. The park is a naturalist’s dream at any time of year.

The People

Many villagers are of Tibetan origin — descendants of people who traded and settled along the ancient routes between Nepal and Tibet. The cultural character is distinct from the Sherpa communities of the Khumbu: prayer flags, mani walls and a warmth that has hardly changed in centuries.

Accommodation

Tea house accommodation throughout, supplemented by home-stay in Tibetan villages on the Tamang Heritage route. Kathmandu hotel on arrival and departure. All accommodation is locally-owned and sourced by our Nepal team.

Altitude

Routes range from 3,771m (Helambu Skyline) to 5,500m (Yala Peak). Compared to Manaslu and EBC, most Langtang routes are more accessible altitude-wise, making them excellent options for first-time Himalayan trekkers or those with less time.

Getting There

Langtang is accessed by road from Kathmandu — a 6–7 hour drive to Syabru Besi or the approach trailheads. No domestic flight required. This makes Langtang one of the most accessible Himalayan destinations from the capital.
